I know it is a little late for a Halloween story but here we go. This is the fruit tray I put out for Prombie, there is a lovely photo of it on the Prombie blog. Okay, it is the exact same photo I have below. When I took out the black grapes to put them on the platter I noticed there were spider webs on the vines inside the grapes. I selected non-webbed grapes, rinsed them well, and put them on the tray. The rest of the grapes went back in the fridge.
When I took the grapes out to pack my lunch on Monday I noticed more webs and instinctively flipped the grapes over on the counter stunning the bad boy in the picture below. At first I assumed it was just a spider that looks like a black widow but to the best of my knowledge it is the real deal. It is a male and he is about 3/4 of an inch long. Sorry about the quality of the picture I took it with my phone and then ran off. The spider was killed and disposed of. I threw out the grapes because I kept thinking about the urban legends with the spider (tarantula, I think) who had laid eggs in either a woman's beehive hairdid or a giant indoor cactus. Cue spooky quaking vibrations and an outpouring of baby spiders. A friend who used to work in the produce section of a grocery store assured me that this is not terribly uncommon. So now I have an irrational fear of grapes.
I am doing an Autumn Soup Supper this weekend. Stay tuned for picture.
i love how the last line of this entry has nothing to do with the topic :D i'm glad you threw the grapes away, it creeps me out to think of baby spiders in your tummy :P
