The most magical party I remember attending as a child was a clown birthday party for my friend Roark. When we showed up at his apartment's clubhouse (could there be anything more cosmopolitan than an apartment clubhouse to a six year old?) fully decked out clowns did our makeup and gave us fantastic crepe paper neck ruffles. There were games and I seem to remember a clown show complete with whip creme pie shenanigans. Epic. I have been trying to recreate the neck ruffles for my Scary Clown party but have had some technical challenges. I cannot get the girth and lift I am looking for. My children have patiently modeled numerous versions.
My childhood bestfriend's mother also used to have THE recipe for Valentino's pizza which, around these parts, is a very big deal. Whenever she had a birthday party we would look forward to eating knock-off Val's all day long. This same mother also made a giant sundae for us in a section of gutter she had wrapped in aluminum foil. This seemed like the most ingenious, most decadent treat that any parent could possibly provide at a party. In fact, I think it may be fair to say that the cavity I had filled today may still be sequela from that sundae.
I would love to hear your best childhood party memories!
